"Tomorrow, West Virginia will send the swamp a message - no one, I mean no one, will tell us how to vote". "Let's find the very best person in West Virginia and not have a situation where we can't compete in November".
Indeed, Mr. Blankenship's rising poll numbers have coincided with an increasing number of highly inflammatory statements and personal attacks on powerful figures such as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
"To the great people of West Virginia we have, together, a really great chance to keep making a big difference", tweeted Trump.
"Don Blankenship... can't win the General Election in your State", he tweeted.
The West Virginia race is one of several primary contests where Republicans are wrestling over their allegiance to Trump. Jeff Flake, a frequent Trump critic and someone mentioned as a possible 3rd party candidate for president in 2020, hit Trump for that mentality in a tweet Monday.
"The establishment is misinforming him because they do not want me to be in the US Senate and promote the President's agenda", Blankenship said.
The Mountain Families PAC, a group of Republican strategists with ties to McConnell, has poured almost $745,000 into the race against Blankenship, and Trump himself came out against the coal baron Monday morning.
In a new radio ad, Blankenship says that "the establishment politicians are getting more desperate and more hostile, calling me a bigot, a moron, a despicable character and mentally ill".
Blankenship's campaign has been seen as an effort to rehabilitate his image after his conviction and prison sentence, but ultimately he's only made his name as the worst candidate in America. As Sean Trende of RealClearPolitics explains, the keys to Democratic competitiveness in West Virginia are the economically left-leaning, culturally conservative working-class voters in the southwest part of the state.
But two other polls from unnamed rival Senate campaigns obtained by the Weekly Standard Monday morning tell a different story.
Much to the chagrin of McConnell and Trump, Blankenship's extreme behavior has appealed to far-right primary voters but will likely serve as a disadvantage when the time comes to move toward the middle in the general election.
The exorbitantly wealthy white-collar criminal - who is trying to steal a nomination from career GOP politicians on the strength of his media exposure and the virulence of his racism - also observed, "As some have said, I am Trumpier than Trump, and this morning proves it'".
Trump's tweet referred to Roy Moore, an Alabama Republican accused of sexual misconduct who was upset previous year in the US Senate election by Democrat Doug Jones.
The victor will face Sen.
Meanwhile, Jenkins said he was "honored" by Trump's tacit endorsement. Democrat Doug Jones ended up winning the seat.
