On December 2, 2017, US President Donald Trump had formally announced the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, reversing almost seven decades of American foreign policy and ordered for the relocation of the US embassy.
Trump sparked global outcry when he unilaterally recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and vowed to relocate Washington's embassy to the city.
Municipal workers erected signposts reading "US Embassy" in Hebrew, Arabic and English around the site, now a US consular building, in the city's Arnona neighbourhood.
With just ten days left until the USA embassy in Israel is moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman commented on the upcoming event during an interview with Hadashot on Saturday. This is a historic event and I thank President Trump.
Also in its statement on Sunday, the POC slammed the Arab cyclists for their "disloyalty" and for taking part in a "free service for the [Israeli] occupation that does not recognize global laws, resolutions and charters of the United Nations on the rights of the Palestinian people and continues to deny the right of the Palestinian Arab people to establish their independent state on their land with al-Quds as its capital".
Road signs directing vehicles and pedestrians to the "US Embassy" were erected on Monday across Jerusalem only days ahead of the relocation of America's mission from Tel Aviv to the US's newly recognized capital.
Pres. Trump has left the question of his participation in the embassy opening in doubt for months, saying that he might come.
"I also stress, as President Trump has said in December, the boundaries of Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem remain subject to negotiations between the parties, and we remain committed to achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace that offers a brighter future for both Israel and the Palestinians". Based on the statment, it apppears unlikely that Trump himself will attend the ceremony.
The Palestinian Authority Sports Authority has condemned the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain as "shameful" for their participation in the global Giro d'Italia bike race that for the first time this weeks was held in Israel. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has been making inroads with the European Union and Russian Federation. Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its "eternal and undivided" capital which it captured from Jordan in the Six Day War in 1967.
Paraguay will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem by the end of May, a Paraguay government spokesman and the Israeli foreign ministry said on Monday. They were promised East Jerusalem as their capital by global community during the United States sponsored peace talks through last several decades.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has warned that the move would have a "disastrous impact on the peace process, on the two-state solution and on the stability and security of the entire region". On February 23, the State Department announced the new embassy will open in May.
