Mr Hodge and wife Chrissy opened the sanctuary in 2003.
A report via the UK's Sun told of Hodge being attacked as he entered a lion's enclosure at the Marakele Predator Park inSouth Africa.
A friend of Mr Hodge told The Sun the sanctuary owner entered the lion compound to investigate a unusual smell.
According to United Kingdom tabloid The Sun, he relocated from the United Kingdom with his wife Chrissy in 2003, and is now in hospital after sustaining neck and jaw injuries. In yet another incident, an elderly man was attacked by a lion at Marakele Predator Park in South Africa.
At the time, Hodge who owned the wildlife park along with a park ranger had become concerned about fissure emanating from the enclosure. Unfortunately, as he wasn't fast enough, the lion caught hold of him and dragged him away.
"He is no fool around lions and knows how to interact with them but clearly something went wrong". At one moment, he lost the grip over the man but again latched on to him to make the final attack amidst the screams for help from onlookers.

Debbie Wagner said: "So sad that the lion is only doing what comes naturally to him".
Visitors to the park are able to watch animals being fed up close, with at least a dozen big cats living on the property.
Whatever be the noble thought of the man, he found himself under attack from the predator who had nearly gone for the kill.
