The Israel defense forces is given in a state of "emergency preparedness to attack". The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said aircraft flew over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, adjacent to Quneitra. Reuters could not independently verify the report.

But if Trump's decision does bring the death of the Iran nuclear deal, that brings risks for Netanyahu and Israel. After an uneventful night, the military on Wednesday called on residents to return to "full civilian routine", meaning studies and excursions would continue as usual, although the shelters would remain open.

The latest air strikes will also add to the pressure on Israel's relationship with Moscow, which has partnered with Iran in propping up the regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. On April 30, Israel was said to have struck government outposts in northern Syria, killing more than a dozen pro-government fighters, many of them Iranians.

Last month, an air strike on the T-4 air base near Syria's Homs city killed seven Iranians. Tehran has vowed revenge.

Israel has not responded to or confirmed the reports, and has said it is not its policy to "respond to such foreign reports".

In its statement, Israel's military further said that its defence systems had been deployed "and IDF (Israel Defence Force) troops are on high alert for an attack".

Later in the early morning hours, explosions could be heard in Damascus while live images were broadcast on television showing projectiles above the Syrian capital and several missiles destroyed by Syrian anti-aircraft systems.

Russian Federation and Israel coordinate their actions within Syria for the goal of deconfliction.

Tensions between the two countries escalated on Tuesday when Israel said it had detected "irregular Iranian activity" in the occupied Golan Heights region of Syria. "We do not want escalation but we are prepared for any scenario".
