May Day, an annual USA celebration and worldwide holiday that's spurred both rallies and riots, is expected to draw hundreds to the streets of cities and towns Tuesday to honor the working class and advocate for the rights of immigrant workers. Labour Day is an annual public holiday in many countries. The Internationa Labour Day came into being in 1884 after the steady demand of American Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions for an eight-hour work.
Ukrainian trade union members and supporters of different left-wing parties attend a rally to mark International Labor Day in downtown Kiev, Ukraine, May 1, 2018. The protests in the US also helped to establish the 8-hour work day norm in India and other countries in the world.
But the same date was not chosen everywhere - in the U.S. and Canada, Labour Day was established as an official bank holiday in September and not on May 1. The place in Haymarket Square where the incident happened was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1992.
At this point in time, there is an active debate about proposals to change the Labour Relations Act with some provisions seeking to take away workers' right to go on strike - itself a violation of the Constitution, which protects the right to withdraw labour.
We might all disagree on International Workers' Day, but as far as May Day itself, it's easy to bypass the political implications of that.
Every year on May Day, a Latin hymn or carol is sung from the top of Magdalen College tower in Oxford, England, and is followed by the ringing of bells to signal the start of Morris dancing (performed by groups of men dressed in colorful clothes) in the streets.
India's working population is a significant contributor to the country's economy. With such large workforce, labour welfare is a very important issue in India and requires adequate attention. In 1977, 34 people were killed there during a May Day event when shots were fired into the crowd from a nearby building. "This will ensure greater productivity, opportunities to learn, grow and gradual transition into the formal sector for increased real income".
While Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection in entire 2017-18 stood Rs 7.41 lakh crore, in March the figure was Rs 89,264 crore.
How do you plan to show gratitude to your workforce?
Enjoy this holiday remembering the hard work of labors around the world.
