Uber launched a new app for its drivers on Tuesday that incorporates the use of a real-time earnings tracker, the recent effort by the ride-hailing service for the improvement of its services for the drivers. Getaround lets users rent private cars from their owners - often at costs cheaper than auto rental companies - and allows owners to make money on their vehicles when they aren't using them. "By sharing our aggregated and anonymized trip data, Uber can help inform decisions about how to adapt existing infrastructure and invest in future solutions to make our cities more efficient", said Rob Khazzam, General Manager, Uber Canada, in a press release.
People can rent SUVs, vans, sedans and other vehicles from the app by the hour or the day.
San Francisco-based Getaround lets users find and instantly book vehicles from private auto owners, all through a mobile app.
Prices are determined based on how long you want to rent the vehicle for.
"So we are having to discount very aggressively, much more than you'd think", Khosrowshahi said, to get people to share rides. Uber also announced it acquired Jump on Monday. You can reserve, unlock and pay for Jump bikes the same way you hail a ride.
Because they are dockless, they can be left at any public bike rack, eliminating a lot of the infrastructure cost other bike-share companies incur, and their location is tracked via Global Positioning System.
"We believe in it", he said, adding that Uber considered autonomous vehicles "part of the solution" and in the long-term key to eliminating individual auto ownership.
We checked Jump's website and also found that they run a subscription program dedicated to those who feel they need more e-biking for their daily schedule.
The first 30 minutes of their ride will cost $2 plus taxes and fees.
When customers reach their destination they can leave their rented bike at any public bike rack.
If a rented bike is left outside the area, users will incur a fee. "About 100 JUMP employees will join Uber, the spokeswoman said".
There is now a wait list for San Francisco residents who want to try out the new feature.
Public transit is on the rise nearly everywhere in the world. As part of the partnership, people will be able to purchase bus and rail tickets with the Uber app.
Right now, Masabi offers its services for public transit systems in New York, Boston, Los Angeles and some global cities.
The deal comes as Uber expands to become a transportation service, rather than just a on- demand taxi service.
The much publicized pedestrian fatality caused by an Uber self-driving test vehicle in Arizona recently (possibly as the result of company negligence) adds a negative-PR dimension to its technological problems, making it seem unlikely that the firm will manage to field its own commercial self-driving taxis anytime soon.
