Following the shooting on February 14 that left 17 dead and sparked a nationwide student-led campaign against gun violence, Florida's Broward County school board have outlined a new list of safety protocols.
There's also an increased police presence at the school.
"A lot of the people I've talked to are dreading going back", Robinson told CNN.
"I definitely feel safer, but in no way is school going to be a place of cognitive education and creativity when it feels like a jail cell", he said.
Koerber thinks metal detectors would be more effective than clear backpacks. As much as I appreciate the effort we as a country need to focus on the real issue instead of turning our schools into prisons, ' she said.
Koerber and others have attached an orange $1.05 price tag to their bags which they say is meant to protest politicians, including Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who accept money from the National Rifle Association. "As a first step, we are looking to see if we can get the kids through these entrances in a timely manner", Principal Ty Thompson said in a March 30 memo to parents.
"We had clear backpacks in the early 2000s for this exact same reason ..." "We see danger now and do not want a copy cat". "I say this to say that out of all that, I rarely recommend clear backpacks for K-12", he said.
'When people pay money for these modifications on our school (the only school in the country that is being altered btw) that means someone is getting paid and I am sick and exhausted of us being treated like prize pigs'. They take a book and hollow it out and put a gun in a book. It's a repeatedly used method. Sports bags and instrument cases are now checked at entry points and must be dropped off with a teacher or coach before school starts.
"Whenever we have some of these catastrophic events that involved a student, there's usually a short surge of interest [in clear backpacks]. Also, unless you very much restrict what's allowed in the backpack, like no textbooks, the clear book bag doesn't have much of a goal", he said.
"Hopefully over time, we will be able to fine-tune the process, while maintaining the safety/security".
