It marks the fourth different time that the UFC has tried, and failed, to book Ferguson vs Nurmagomedov.
Now sure, Holloway's certainly going to collect a nice check for this bout, and, he also has a chance to become just the fifth fighter in UFC history to win titles in two divisions. "He replaced Conor McGregor, who has not fought inside the Octagon since taking on Floyd Mayweather Jr.in a boxing match last August".
When the news of Ferguson's injury was announced by UFC President Dana White, mixed martial art fans around the world held their breath and waited for McGregor's response. You can check out his message here. And now Holloway (19-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) and Nurmagomedov (25-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) will square off for the 155-pound title in Saturday's main event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., which airs on pay-per-view.
Holloway had to pull out of the UFC 222 main event against Frankie Edgar in March because of a leg injury.
"I don't think Conor McGregor could make the weight on six days' notice".
White said Ferguson's injury is a serious one where the interim champion will need surgery.
And McGregor, who still officially holds the lightweight belt, blasted both fighters on Twitter this evening.
"I care about my legacy", Nurmagomedov said.
There's been a lot of talk about McGregor's next opponent, with Georges St-Pierre, Nate Diaz and even Floyd Mayweather Jr. being floated as possibilities in addition to Ferguson, Nurmagomedov and Holloway.
Nurmagomedov suspects that Holloway took this fight for the money, not for the belt. Most recently at UFC 209, Nurmagomedov pulled from the bout following a failed weight-cut ahead of their planned interim title fight.
"... I was like, how do you turn down an opportunity like this?"
"As I was completing my UFC pre-fight media obligations on Friday I had an accident on a studio set that tore my ligament in my knee". It's a shame about the late notice and the weight difference, but this is still one hell of a fight. "I think it's going to be a long night for him".
