"What I did was wrong". I apologize to the court.
Van der Zwaan came back to the United States weeks later to correct his lies to the special counsel's office, but at Tuesday's hearing, there was discussion as to whether his decision to correct the record was purely voluntary or at the prompting of his lawyers.
None of the charges Manafort now faces alleges coordination with the Kremlin, and Manafort's attorneys had used that point to argue that Mueller had exceeded his authority by bringing charges against him accusing him of various financial crimes and acting as an unregistered foreign agent on behalf of Ukrainian interests.
Gates and Manafort were indicted previous year on charges related to laundering tens of millions of dollars and failing to register as agents acting on behalf of a foreign government. "This is lying in a federal criminal investigation".
He struck a plea deal in February.
Weissmann declined to ask the judge to give van Der Zwaan a specific length of sentence.
According to a two-page indictment released by the special counsel's office February 20, the Ukraine-connected attorney misled authorities about his most recent contact with Gates; deleted and failed to produce emails Mueller's team had requested; and misrepresented his involvement in an global law firm's report on former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in 2012. His work seemed to focus on the former Soviet Union. The report, authored by the law firm, was about the corruption trial of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
Yanukovych was in the midst of a power struggle with another prominent Ukrainian politician, Yulia V. Tymoshenko, which he made a decision to solve by jailing her in the fall of 2011.
Prosecutors have alleged that Manafort and Gates used an offshore account to secretly pay $4 million for the report.
The judge said van der Zwaan, unlike some defendants who have come before her, possesses the financial and emotional resources to weather hard times.
Both Gates and Manafort have been charged in Mueller's probe with lying to investigators and conspiracy, tied to Manafort's work as a lobbyist for pro-Russia politicians in Ukraine.
The van der Zwaan case could add to the pressure the investigation is putting on Trump, his family and top aides.
A spokesman for Manafort, who is under a court gag order, has previously declined to comment about the van der Zwaan filings. He has said he met with Kilimnik in person in May 2016 and again in New York City in August 2016, about two weeks before Manafort resigned as Trump's campaign chairman.
The indictment also alleges that van der Zwaan deleted an email between himself and Person A sent around the same time as those conversations - and told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that he "did not know" where the email was.
