Big winners of 65th National Film Awards

"It was not because of the relationship we shared but because she was the most deserving candidate for her portrayal in Mom", said Shekhar Kapur, this year's feature film jury head.

He questioned if Sridevi really deserved the award or was it given to her because she was no more and as a piece of tribute.

S.S. Rajamouli's record-breaking war epic Baahubali 2: The Conclusion won the award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, besides scoring in technical categories such as action direction and special effects. MOM was the third film Sridevi did after she returned to the industry after an nearly 15 year hiatus.

The best actress award at the 65th National film awards led to a tie-breaker, with Malayalam actress Asha Sarath being a top choice for best actress.

Adil, who has worked in films like "Parched", "Angry Indian Goddesses', "Life of Pi", tweeted: "After a long time the Chairman of the jury of National Film Awards made a lot of sense!" From a child actor till her last film.

Though there is no one from the Malayalam film industry on the panel, Mollywood is hopeful of bagging some key awards this year.

Marathi film Murakhiya, Odia film Hello RC, Malayalam film Take Off received a special mention award and actress Parvathy too got a special mention. Indira Gandhi Award For Best Debut Film Of A Director was given to the Jasari language movie "Sinjar" directed by Pampally. "She is not with us today but her legacy will always live on". The jury also counted screenwriter Imtiaz Hussain, lyricist Mehboob and actress Gautami Tadimalla among its members. Riddhi Sen won best actor for "Nagarkirtan". Amid of this, late veteran actress Sridevi was also awarded the Best Actress Award for her film, Mom. But director Shekhar Kapoor was not happy with this announcement.
