Afghanistan accuses Pakistan of air strikes ahead of leaders' talks

"Peace, prosperity and stability of the two countries are interlinked", said a statement issued after a meeting between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and President Ashraf Ghani held in Kabul on Monday.

Besides the Afghan president, the prime minister will also meet Afghan Chief Executive Dr Abdullah Abdullah.

The statement said information about the ongoing "operations is shared with the Afghan security forces on a regular basis".

During the talks held at Afghan Presidential Palace in Kabul, the two sides discussed relations between the two Countries, fight against terrorism, Afghan-led peace talks, return of Afghan refugees, prisoners exchange and Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity. Ghani also invited Pakistan to forget the past and begins new era to bring peace in the region. In the near-term, expect both countries to tentatively boost bilateral economic cooperation, particularly in regard to small-scale investments in Afghan infrastructure; however, no major investment initiatives are expected.

Pakistan also aspires to deepen people to people contacts.

The visit by the Pakistan premier came in the backdrop of Pakistan's support to Ghani's peace offering to the Taliban and wish of strengthening bilateral engagement with Islamabad.

Afghanistan and the United States have blamed Pakistan for allegedly providing safe havens to elements of the Afghan Taliban and Haqqani Network.

Abbasi had earlier visited Afghanistan in February this year to inaugurate the TAPI gas pipeline project.

The statement said the two sides discussed Pakistan's connection to Central Asia, energy transition, Quetta-Kandahar-Herat and Peshawar-Jalalabad railroad projects and construction of Peshawar-Jalalabad highway.

The two leaders agreed that the APAPPS would provide a useful framework for broad based and structured engagement on all issues of mutual interest and chose to operationalize the five working groups under APAPPS.

Afghanistan on Thursday accused Pakistan of air strikes causing "huge financial damages" in its province of Kunar bordering Pakistan, highlighting long-standing mistrust between the neighbours, even as both seek ways to improve security.

Afghanistan should focus on plugging gaps on its side of the border and refrain from the "blame game", the ministry said.
