NY joins three other states to create gun-tracking database

Gov. Cuomo and the Democratic governors of Connecticut, New Jersey and Rhode Island announced the creation Thursday of the "States for Gun Safety" coalition to share resources and intelligence to curb gun trafficking and prevent risky individuals from purchasing guns. We're all going to pass stronger gun laws in our states.

"This is a federal government that has gone backwards on this issue", said Gov. Cuomo.

The multi-state database to supplement the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System "will share information about individuals who are prohibited from purchasing or possessing a firearm within each state", says the press release.

The states have formed what's being called the "States for Gun Safety Coalition".

In an effort to combat gun violence, tri-state area governors on Thursday announced the creation of the "States for Gun Safety" coalition as well as a consortium to asses gun violence data.

"We're going to take action", said Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo. Last week's incident in Broward County, Florida is the deadliest school shooting since.

The four governors have entered into a memorandum of understanding to share information on firearms in an effort to trace and intercept illegal guns. The consortium will be operated by a partnership of to-be-announced colleges and universities in the member states.

Murphy noted how Democratic governors similarly banded together to form the United States Climate Alliance, agreeing to adhere to the terms of the Paris climate agreement despite President Donald Trump's move to withdraw the US from the deal. Mr. David said he did not know how many guns have been seized on the basis of New York's list.

"I don't understand why I can still go in a store and buy a weapon of war", Parkland student Samuel Zeif said. For years, gun control advocates have said such research is hamstrung at the federal level.

Since then, America's gun epidemic has only worsened.

He said other nations have confronted the issue of mass shootings and automatic weapons, but the US has failed.

Incidents including the massacres at Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, the Orlando nightclub, and Las Vegas have made global headlines, but the CDC has not attempted to challenge Congress or the NRA again. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said that shooting accelerated the governors' idea to form the coalition, which has been in the works for about a year.

Cuomo and his Democratic counterparts said the coalition was necessary because of the inability of the federal government and Congress to effectively deal with the issue of gun violence. As states, we must work together to take the steps and enact the measures to protect our residents and our communities.
