USA citizens are advised to avoid travel "due to serious risks to safety and security".
"We gave our embassies authority to provide their host governments with an advance of the final travel advisory for their country if they thought that was important to the host government", said Bernier-Toth on a conference call with reporters Wednesday, adding that "by and large, I think there have been no surprises".
Placing Pakistan in Level 3 (reconsider travel) category, the State Department has advised U.S. citizens to not travel to Balochistan province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province, and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) due to terrorism. Violent crime, such as sexual assault, has occurred at tourist sites and in other locations.
Through the four-tiered system, launched by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs, countries are ranked from level one to four, with level one being of lowest travel risk.
New rankings replace the vague and often confusing system of issuing "travel alerts" and "travel warnings".
Armenia is included in the first category.
On January 10, the Department of State launched improvements to how it shares information with USA travelers.
The US asks its citizens to "reconsider travel" to Level 3 countries such as Pakistan, while for Level 4, which lists countries such as Afghanistan, the US recommends "Do Not Travel". "Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets and shopping malls and local government facilities".
China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Nepal, Bangladesh, United Kingdom, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico and Saudi Arabia are among the nations classified under Level Two of the advisory travel programme.
"Terrorists have targeted USA diplomats and diplomatic facilities in the past, and evidence suggests they continue to do so", the advisory explained.
Singapore has been classified as a Level One country under the new USA travel warning system. "In the past, there have been large-scale terrorist attacks resulting in hundreds of casualties", the State Department advisory said.
Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) are placed in the "do not travel" category due to terrorism.
Cuba, which previous year came with the travel advisory to not travel there, is now listed as level 3.
