"When we finish with you, the person you were will no longer exist", Dominika is told as she struggles to endure the pain of each specially trained exercise.
"Dominika Egorova is many things". It's here, except it's called Red Sparrow and it stars Jennifer Lawrence speaking in a Russian accent while donning an array of flattering outfits. In another, she turns on the very men who shattered her life when she becomes more powerful than they realize.
While she's working for the Soviet government, and seems to be working with the American CIA agent who's supposed to be her mark, a couple of lines stuck out at me from the trailer.
In the trailer, Lawrence's Dominika Egorova is sent to sparrow school, a secret intelligence service that trains young adults to use their bodies and minds as tactics.
It's not a awful accent, though it's clear why the first trailer wanted to focus on the eerie visuals and the wordless chemistry between Lawrence and Joel Edgerton's American CIA agent.
Dominika endures a perverse and sadistic training process, and emerges as the most risky, seductive and manipulative Sparrow the program has ever produced. It's that compassion that makes her fall in love with her mark, Nathanial Nash (Edgerton), an American CIA agent acting as a mole in Russian Federation. Once she's in the sparrow program, however, Dominika finds the real battle isn't for country - it's to retain her soul, as the program tries to strip it away from her.
I just hope that she's allowed to show more emotion than Charlize Theron did in Atomic Blonde. Fans of Lawrence in X-Menand The Hunger Gameswill get to see her kick butt again. The film hits theaters on March 2, 2018.
Jennifer Lawrence has been known for pushing herself to the edge for her roles, even going so far as to apparently tear her diaphragm during the film of mother! from screaming too much.
