Sopore:Four policemen were killed in a blast at Goal market main Chowk Sopore of north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Saturday.
Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant outfit has taken responsibility for the attack, but the Kashmir police said it will have to verify the claim. Constables Parvez Ahmad, Ghulam Nabi and Mohammad Amin each had a three or four-year-old child.Less than a week ago, Jaish suicide attackers had stormed a CRPF camp in south Kashmir's Pulwama, killing five CRPF men including an inspector. He said that three shops were also damaged in the blast.
"Four policemen including an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) were killed in the powerful blast", he said.
Authorities had deployed a large number of security forces in the market and other areas of Sopore to maintain law and order situation in the wake of the protest shutdown. The area has been cordoned off and a search operation is underway. "My deepest condolences to their families", she tweeted.
Mehbooba's predecessor and opposition NC leader Omar Abdullah wrote on Twitter: "Very sad news from #Sopore". "May the four courageous J&K police personnel killed in the line of duty today rest in peace", Abdullah tweeted. The ADGP Armed Police, SA Mujtaba, the SSP Baramulla, the SSP Sopore, the CO of army's 22RR and the CO of paramilitary 179 CRPF also paid tributes to the slain policemen.
This was the first major militant attack in the Valley in 2018 in which security forces suffered casualties.
