Bad news for Liverpool as January transfer target staying put

Liverpool and Leipzig agreed a deal over Keita during the summer and he will join the Anfield club at the end of the season.

Liverpool agreed a deal with the German club for the Guinean global a full year in advance last summer, paying a premium on top of the release clause in Keita's contract which was due to become active ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

Liverpool had been willing to pay up to £80m last summer, but the Bundesliga side were reluctant to sell at any price.

Philippe Coutinho's transfer to Barcelona earlier this month has left a heap of cash available to Jurgen Klopp to reinvest in his squad.

Keita will join Liverpool next summer after the Reds paid an £8m premium on top of his £47m release clause.

Keita scored in RB Leipzig's 3-1 win over Schalke on Saturday.

According to the latest reports from German publication Bild cited by the Liverpool Echo, Leipzig made a final offer of €20m which was dismissed by Liverpool. "RB Leipzig want Keita to stay for the rest of the season but they may be will to do a deal if Liverpool put more money on the table". It would only have been possible to reach a mutual agreement, if an exorbitant additional fee was involved.

"As everyone knows, we are not a selling club", Ragnick stressed.

Mahrez embarked on a odd sequence of events on transfer deadline day in the summer when his national side allowed him to leave to seek a move away from the King Power Stadium.
