Along with the UK, France, Russia, and China, the USA is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, with the power to block any resolution from passing with the use of a veto.
The one-page draft declared that any decision on the status of Jerusalem would have no legal effect and must be reversed. The vote has underlined once again the widespread worldwide opposition to the USA move, even among some of its closest allies. Palestinians want the capital of an independent Palestinian state to be in the city's eastern sector, which Israel captured in a war in 1967 and annexed in a move never recognised internationally.
The draft resolution was circulated among UNSC members last week. The Council's other 14 members, including France and Britain, all voted in favor.
He added that the Arab group in the United Nations will convene later to assess the situation and determine the next step in order to defend the status of Jerusalem.
"What we witnessed here today in the Security Council is an insult".
Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the UN, said in the Security Council that "the United States had the courage and honesty to recognise a fundamental reality". The US rejected the "outrageous claim" that they were setting back the peace process.
"The United States chooses to disregard global law and ignore the worldwide consensus", he charged.
Russia's deputy United Nations ambassador, Vladimir Safronkov, said the issue of "moving as quickly as possible toward direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations" is becoming more important, and he reiterated Russia's proposal to hold a summit between the Palestinian and Israeli leaders.
As the Russian diplomat called on all parties involved to "show restraint" he said: "We are ready to become an honest mediator here", making thinly veiled remarks that the US' steps are favouring Israel. Apart from that, the draft calls on countries not to recognize any actions or measures that run counter to the Security Council resolutions and to refrain from establishing diplomatic missions in that city.
"The United States will not be told by any country where we can put our embassy", Haley told the council after the veto.
The resolution also called for reversing the "negative trends on the ground that are imperilling the two-State solution" for Arab-Israeli dispute.
"The United States will continue to play an extremely important role in the search for peace in the Middle East".
And then hope that PA President Mahmoud Abbas - the guy who premised his Ph.D. thesis on denying the existence of the Holocaust - will "control" Hamas, the virulently anti-Semitic offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, which in its 1988 charter - and affirmed every year to this very day - refuses to recognize the State of Israel's right to exist and is committed to jihad to destroy every last vestige of Israel and every Jew on earth.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video on his Twitter account in which he thanked Haley for the USA veto.
He said Haley "lit a candle of truth" and dispelled "lies". One defeated the many.
