Freightliner Trucks help deliver Wreaths Across America to honor vets

Barberton High School Business Management classes held a fundraiser to purchase wreaths for graves at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery with the help of their teacher Kristen Ledman.

"The mission of Wreaths Across America is to remember our fallen veterans, to honor those who are now serving, to honor those who have served, and to teach younger generations about their sacrifices", said Randy Lewer, the location coordinator for the Florida National Cemetery and Imagery Analyst with U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. He said it is due to the sacrifices of the men and women who are lying in Mound View Cemetery - and other cemeteries across the nation and overseas - who gave their lives so we can live in freedom and without fear. While Whyte said he came to support his daughter, the visit to the cemetery struck a deeper cord.

According to a release, more than 8,307 wreaths were placed in 2016. Wreaths were sponsored for $15. More than 9,000 wreaths were placed Saturday. Brumbaugh's son organized the Findlay Wreaths Across America remembrance as his Eagle Scout Service Project. The theme this year was "I'm an American", and was inspired by a song written by Maine singer-songwriter Rick Charette.

As the wreaths were laid, each volunteer said the name of the deceased veteran and thanked them for their service.

During Caribou's ceremony, led by Maine VFW State Adjutant Andre Dumas, local veterans placed a wreath in front of the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery committal shelter.

Though Caribou has participated in Wreaths Across America for over a quarter of a century, Dumas said this is the first year in which participants had enough wreaths to place one on every headstone in the cemetery. More improvements are on the way in 2018, including the possible installation of a gazebo, Spitalere said. As one of the largest corporate supporters of WAA, Walmart donated $215,000 to help purchase more than 23,000 wreaths for placement at national cemeteries and memorial sites around the US, including Great Lakes National Cemetery.
