Arkansas reportedly reaches deal with SMU coach Chad Morris

Chad Morris has left SMU and is the new head football coach at the University of Arkansas, after days of speculation.

The 49-year-old Morris is 14-22 in three seasons with the Mustangs, including 7-5 this year. The former Wisconsin head coach was signed through the 2020 season and will be paid an $11.8 million buyout.

Chad Morris has left SMU for Arkansas.

According to multiple reports, Morris held a team meeting this morning with the Mustangs football team to tell them about his decision to come to the Natural State. He also had a one-year stint as offensive coordinator at Tulsa in 2010 following 16 seasons as a head coach at five different high schools in Texas.

After moving on from Bielema, Arkansas made a heavy play for Auburn's Gus Malzahn, an Arkansas native who played receiver for the Razorbacks.

Morris replaces five-year Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema fired November 24 after the Razorbacks concluded a 4-8 overall/1-7 SEC campaign. "I am pleased that Hunter Yurachek had the opportunity to be involved in the final decision and offer and we can not wait to have Chad leading our program".

"As we began our search for the next head football coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks, Chad Morris was a name that quickly emerged as someone that would be an excellent choice for our program", Peoples said.

In his first year at SMU, the Mustangs went 2-10. He was sacked a day later.
