Tonight's unveiling at Tesla's design studio in Hawthorne, Calif., set a new standard for hype, with hundreds of fans cheering in the stands. And for vehicles, period.
"The point of doing this is just to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars", he said. "Driving a gasoline sports auto is going to feel like a steam engine with a side of quiche".
And while Musk promoted the Tesla Semi's autopilot feature, that's not unique, either.
The big reveal took the focus off Tesla's red ink and slow production ramp-up for the mass-market Model 3 sedan, at least for a night.
Musk rattled off Semi statistics aimed at putting diesel trucks to shame.
Roberts added that the use of these trucks will be most beneficial for local routes and that J.B. Hunt planned to first deploy the Tesla Semi on the West Coast.
Mr Musk is involved in many other projects and announced plans he says could allow his SpaceX company to colonise Mars in September.
What about charging? Tesla says a new network of Tesla Megachargers will enable 400 miles of charge in just 30 minutes.
Could this be the electric truck the world has been waiting for?
With a full load, the truck can still reach that speed in 20 seconds, according to Musk, much faster than any diesel-powered truck. Drive-train redundancy should also guard against jackknifing and boost the Semi's reliability. The company is guaranteeing the Semi drivetrain will last to 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometres), equivalent to 40 trips around the globe.
"It's as though you're driving a Model S or a Model X or a Model 3", he said.
Interior of Tesla's new Roadster. Plaid is of course Tesla's next level of acceleration, paying homage to Space Balls the movie, that goes beyond Ludicrous mode. Well Tesla has a new one out and it's even quicker than any other Tesla now in the market. "There's only thing that's beyond Ludicrous, which is Plaid", Musk said. Then Tesla announced a new roadster, which Tesla says will go from zero to 60 in 1.9 seconds, has a top speed of 250 miles per hour and has a 620-mile range.
With a top speed of over 250 miles per hour, it is set to become the fastest production vehicle in the world.
Not only could the Roadster achieve a mind-boggling zero-to-60 time of 1.9 seconds, but it boasted a wild 620 miles of highway range, or 1,000 kilometers.
"These numbers sound nutty, but they're real", Musk said. That is until they come to realize the $200,000 to $250,000 price tag.
Reactions ran the gamut from rhapsodic to restrained.
It is not clear yet what the final price of the truck will be.
But some said they weren't yet sold on the Semi.
"Elon's showmanship remains intact, even as his customers' patience for Model 3 delivery wanes", Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader, wrote in an e-mail.
Still, the Semi is likely to make some waves in the industry.
