PM Modi, Australia PM Turnbull hold bilateral meeting — ASEAN Summit

Duterte has been embroiled in controversies ever since he took the Philippines' presidential seat in June past year.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I sang uninvited, upon the orders of the commander-in-chief of the United States", Duterte later said, according to the ABS-CBN news channel. He has encouraged citizens in Philippines to bring drug peddlers to justice in the country as part of his crackdown on suspected drug dealers and users.

Police have killed nearly 4000 people in operations throughout the Philippines.

Trump was originally scheduled to depart Manila on Monday but he added a day to the visit so he could more fully participate in one of the summits.

Both leaders have publicly praised the other and appear to have a good relationship, with some Filipinos even calling Duterte the "Filipino Trump". Duterte then called the reporters "spies", which made Trump laugh. "And the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) conference has been handled beautifully by the president in the Philippines", according to Reuters reports.

"President Trump expressed his condolences for the tragic loss of life in Marawi City at the hands of ISIS-affiliated terrorists, and congratulated the Armed Forces of the Philippines for its success in liberating Marawi", according to a joint statement released after the bilateral meeting between Trump and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, November 13. "This is the bilateral meeting".

But a spokesperson for the Philippine leader says the topic did not come up during their discussions.

The shift remakes the United States' approach to the world, putting more of a focus on trade and the economy while lessening the emphasis on issues like human rights and regional conflicts.

Canada's President Justin Trudeau is still in the Philippines pushing human rights.
