The U.S. Navy said Saturday that a U.S. helicopter "deployed flares" as Iranian Naval vessels in the Persian Gulf approached at high speed in an incident the Iranians have described as "provocative and unprofessional". "Islam's warriors, without paying attention to this unconventional and unusual behaviour from the American vessels, continued their mission in the area and the aircraft carrier and accompanying battleship left the area". A similar incident involving the U.S. and Iran took place in the region on Tuesday.
"IRGC navy patrol boat continued its mission, ignoring the unprofessional and provocative move by the United States warship and the warship left the zone after a while", the IRGC said in a statement, IRNA reports.
This incident followed further confrontation in the Gulf when a USA naval vessel fired warning shots at a Guards vessel as it closed in on the American boat, US officials said Tuesday.
In a similar incident, the USS Thunderbolt fired warning shots at Iranian navy boats operating in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday.
Iranian forces view the American presence in the Gulf as provocative. The U.S. must certify that Iran is meeting the conditions of the deal every three months.
Years of mutual animosity had eased when Washington lifted sanctions on Tehran last year as part of a deal to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions.
A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the Iranian boat was armed but its weapons were unmanned.
The US legislation imposes mandatory penalties on people involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them.
In remarks in June 2016, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei underlined that security of the Persian Gulf region comes within the purview of the regional countries alone, and dismissed the USA claim of seeking security in the region.
